Tomorrow is the start of the greatest two-wheeled championship on earth, the 2016 edition of the Speedway Grand Prix. Taking place in Krsko, Slovenia, the season is stacked to the gills with talent ready to start fresh and push each other to the limits. Not familiar with Speedway? Here’s a highlight video from last year’s championship, with a quick explanation after the bump.
The Bikes
Each motorcycle has the bare minimums to move and nothing more. A simple tubular steel hardtail chassis holds a direct-drive, single speed, air cooled 500cc single-cylinder engine burning Methanol capable of pushing the 78kg motorcycles to speeds over 70mph. There aren’t even brakes, relying on high compression engine braking to slow for corners.
The Riders
Each race meet has 16 riders; the top eight riders from the previous year, the top 3 from the Grand Prix Qualifier series, and four riders chosen by the promoters who don’t qualify by the above methods.
!!! UNKNOWN HEADER TYPE (MULTI-LINE BREAK?) !!!
Each individual race in the Meet consists of four riders with each race lasts four laps. Each meet has 20 Heats, two Semis, and one Final, all following this format. The 20 Heats allows each of the 16 riders an opportunity to ride against every other rider, giving everyone a fair opportunity to score point. After the Heats, the top 8 riders move on to the Semis, with the top two in each Semi moving into the Final. The winner of the Final, as could be assumed, is the winner of the Event.
